MY STORY
My Story
I have spent a lot of my life trying to figure out where I belong.
I grew up in church, moved more times than I care to count, changed schools without always changing houses, and learned pretty early how to become whatever the room seemed to need. That followed me into adulthood. There have been churches that felt like home and churches I had to survive. People who loved me incredibly well and people who hurt me. Careers, stages, pulpits, hospital rooms, relationships, reinventions, and more than a few spectacularly questionable decisions along the way.
For years, I tried to make all of that into a clean story. Eventually I realized I couldn't.
That is where The Journal of an Unreliable Witness came from.
I wanted to tell the truth as honestly as I know how without pretending memory is perfect, that every person involved would remember things the way I do, or that I have always been the hero of my own story. I haven't. These pages are about faith, sexuality, family, shame, love, loss, belonging, and the sometimes ridiculous ways I have tried to find all of them.
I am still a church guy. I still sing. I still believe in grace. I still ask too many questions. I still occasionally walk into a room wondering what version of myself it wants.
The difference is that I am finally learning I don't have to become that person to stay.
That, more than anything, is the story I wanted to tell.
A truer me.
THE THREADS
What I Write About
I write about belonging. About faith that survives the people who sometimes make it difficult to believe. About family, sexuality, masculinity, shame, memory, and the strange ways we learn who we are by becoming who other people need us to be.
I am interested in the places where two things can be true at the same time. Where someone can love you and still hurt you. Where a church can wound you and still be home. Where memory can be unreliable and the experience can still be real. Where healing does not erase what happened, but gives you new evidence about what might be possible.
Mostly, I write about what it means to belong without having to earn the chair.
BEHIND THE BOOK
Thirty-four witness statements. One life, still becoming.
The Journal of an Unreliable Witness is a collection of thirty-four witness statements, each a piece of a life lived in the tension between what happened, what was believed, and what can be known.
